Description of the competition

The brand new fully-electric rallycross kit that will form the basis of cars competing in the official FIA World Rallycross Championship electric support series Projekt E from this year, has won its first ever rallycross event in the hands of Austrian rally legend Manfred Stohl.

The STARD team, responsible for the development and production of the 450kW, three-motor, four-wheel-drive electric kit that will be fitted to all cars in Projekt E, ran a Ford Fiesta ElectRX in a Hungarian Rallycross Championship event at Kakucs last weekend.

Planning to use the weekend as a final validation and sign-off for the Projekt E kit and its parameters ahead of the 2020 World RX season starting next month in Sweden, Stohl and his team were at the front of the competitive regional field throughout the event and eventually won the final against Euro RX regular Tamas Karai in an Audi S1, in the process taking the first outright victory for an electric car in rallycross.

“Since the launch of the first car using our REVelution concept at the World RX event in Riga last year, our engineers have continued to refine and optimise the functionality of the powertrain systems especially with regards to user friendliness. My main target at Kakucs was to validate and sign-off the final changes in a real race weekend and competition circumstances from a driver’s point of view. We didn’t focus at all on the chassis performance for this race. But, thanks to the countless independent professional race drivers who have tested the car since September last year and given their input, the drivability of the powertrain system is from another planet, honestly,” explained Stohl Group President and Development Driver Manfred Stohl. “Driving this Fiesta ElectRX gives me more pleasure than any other car before and it was amazing for me to be back on the top step of the podium, together with this car.”

STARD CEO and founder Michael Sakowicz continued: “It was special to be back racing after this very strange period for the whole world in 2020, and our Fiesta ElectRX was received very positively in the paddock by other teams and spectators. We went there to validate our recent work, and the result was the icing on the cake. We are all involved in developing this concept with a huge passion and belief, and that we could write more history is very sweet.”

Projekt E will join the FIA World Rallycross Championship from the first weekend of the 2020 season at Holjes, Sweden (August 20 – 23).
